SA-US relations have been reset with Washington visit: President

Date: May 27, 2025

South African (SA) President Cyril Ramaphosa has defended his trip with the SA delegation to the United States (US).

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Member of Parliament Omphile Maotwe asked the President what the visit has achieved for the country.

Ramaphosa says they have accomplished their mission.

He says soon after leaving Washington, further diplomatic deliberations began between two countries on a number of issues including addressing tariff increases.

“We do believe that we have achieved those objectives. The engagements with the American government have started soon after we left Washington. Engagements have now commenced. There are discussions are going in relation to tariffs, in relation to investments. We believe that we have reset the relationship despite what we could have seen in television. We were able to have a much more meaningful discussion and meeting with President [Donald] Trump and his representative during the quiet room where we had lunch together and had a meaningful engagement on a number of issues.”
