Illegal miners arrested in SA province with unpolished diamonds

Date: May 14, 2025

Two illegal miners were arrested in South Africa's (SA) Northern Cape province after being found in possession of unpolished diamonds.

The suspects, aged 29 and 35, were detained yesterday at Port Nolloth as part of the ongoing Operation Vala Umgodi.

According to Police Spokesperson Timothy Sam, the arrests followed a tip-off about a white Ford bakkie reportedly transporting illegal miners with diamonds. Acting on this information, officers intercepted the vehicle as it neared Port Nolloth.

A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a substantial quantity of unpolished diamonds, prompting the immediate arrest of the two men. They are expected to appear in court shortly.

The arrests are part of SA’s ongoing efforts to tackle illegal mining activities, which continue to pose significant challenges in the region.
