Former SA Ambassador, DA Chief Whip dies at 82

Date: May 10, 2025

Douglas Gibson, the former South African (SA) Ambassador to Thailand and a key figure in the Democratic Alliance (DA), has passed away at the age of 82. The DA announced his death in a statement yesterday.

Though Gibson had stepped down from active politics, he continued to play a significant role in the party, particularly in its decision to join the Government of National Unity. His contribution to SA politics is remembered for his commitment to the country and its values.

In expressing his condolences, DA leader John Steenhuisen described Gibson as a “great South African” and a “dedicated politician and public servant.” Steenhuisen praised Gibson’s unrelenting efforts to fight for the rights of all South Africans, noting that his dedication to non-racialism and freedom remained steadfast throughout his career.

“Douglas was a tireless advocate for freedom in SA. Even in his final days, he remained passionate about the principles he and our party stand for,” said Steenhuisen. “But what set him apart was his deep compassion, his willingness to engage with others, and the humanity he brought to everything he did. He was not just a political figure; he was a true ambassador for our country, for our party, and for the values of equality and freedom.”

Douglas Gibson’s passing marks the loss of a remarkable individual whose legacy continues to influence SA politics and the pursuit of a fairer society.
