Aware.org raises alarm on underage drinking crisis in SA

Date: Jun 16, 2024

In a sobering report, the Association for Alcohol Responsibility and Education (aware.org) has voiced significant concerns regarding the prevalence of alcohol misuse among South African youth.

Findings from a study by the Human Sciences Research Council in 2022 indicate that nearly one-third of South Africans aged 16 and above are alcohol consumers.

Alarmingly, the majority of these individuals partake in binge drinking episodes, often consuming four or more alcoholic beverages in a single session.

During Youth Month, aware.org is seizing the moment to spotlight the dire consequences of underage drinking. Lebogang Mashigo, a senior programmes manager at the organisation, emphasised the urgency of addressing this issue.

"The rampant underage drinking is a glaring problem. At aware.org, we are committed to educating the youth about the perils of alcohol consumption through initiatives like 'Makers of Tomorrow', our flagship campaign against underage drinking," Mashigo stated.

As the nation commemorates Youth Day, aware.org is intensifying its efforts to engage with young people about the importance of making responsible decisions concerning alcohol.

"Honoring the legacy of the Soweto uprising's brave young souls means confronting the challenges our youth face today, including the scourge of underage drinking," added Mashigo.
