The soldiers were part of a Southern African Development Community (SADC) peacekeeping mission aimed at stabilising the conflict-hit region. The deployment was not without tragedy, earlier this year, 14 SA troops were killed during clashes with M23 rebels near the city of Goma.
Speaking at a media briefing, Motshekga said the only remaining task is the repatriation of military equipment, which is currently in Tanzania.
“All our troops are back home. The prime mission equipment is being verified in Tanzania and will be transported back by air and sea,” she said.
She also thanked neighbouring governments for their co-operation in the safe withdrawal of forces.
“We are grateful to the government of Rwanda for granting safe passage, and to Tanzania, Malawi, and all involved parties for their support,” Motshekga added.
SA’s role in the DRC has been under scrutiny following the casualties, but government maintains that its involvement was essential in advancing peace and regional stability.
