SA Minister urges vigilance amid deadly fires, cold front

Date: May 21, 2025

Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa has urged the public to exercise extreme caution following a surge in fire incidents and a severe cold front sweeping across parts of South Africa (SA).

The warning comes after a tragic house fire in Mayfair, Johannesburg, Gauteng Province, on Monday claimed the lives of four children, all under the age of two.

As winter sets in, the risk of deadly fires escalates, particularly in informal settlements where many residents rely on open flames, braziers, and makeshift heating sources.

Hlabisa has directed municipalities, emergency services, disaster management teams, and traditional leaders to remain on high alert to prevent further tragedies.

COGTA Spokesperson, Pearl Maseko-Binqose, says, "Residents are strongly encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel during adverse weather, secure outdoor items susceptible to wind damage, stay indoors where possible,  follow verified updates from South African Weather Service and local authorities, and report fire hazards and emergencies without delay."
