While acknowledging that the commitment to repay the e-toll debt has impacted its finances, the provincial government insists that a series of reforms will be implemented to meet budgetary obligations.
The Gauteng government has assured the public that it still has close to $2.8 billion available to be spent until the end of March this year. During a media briefing in Johannesburg, Gauteng MEC for Finance and Economic Development, Lebogang Maile, provided reassurance that the province's finances remain robust.
"These articles merit correction as they are grounded on an erroneous premise that will only serve to sow despondency among the residents and businesses in the province. As of the end of November 2024, overall expenditure for GPG stood at $6.16 billion or 68% of the adjusted budget of $9.04 billion, leaving an amount of $2.88 billion available to be spent until the end of March 2025," Maile stated.
Maile emphasised that the provincial government is committed to implementing a host of reforms to ensure that budgetary obligations are met. These measures are aimed at stabilising the province's finances and maintaining public confidence in the government's fiscal management.
