Lesotho Activist to appear in court over social media post on unemployment

Date: Jul 1, 2025

A Lesotho Activist, Tšolo Thakeli, is expected to appear in court tomorrow following his arrest over a social media video in which he criticised the country’s unemployment rate.

Thakeli, known by his nickname “Chikaika”, posted the video shortly after Prime Minister Sam Matekane announced a plan to create 70 000 jobs, with the rollout of the initiative expected to begin on July 1. The activist questioned the feasibility of the plan, reportedly sparking concern among authorities.

According to the World Bank, Lesotho’s official unemployment rate stands at 16%, but it rises to 24% among young people. Analysts believe the actual figures could be higher, as many in the informal sector are not reflected in the statistics.

Thakeli is a law graduate and prominent youth activist. His arrest has drawn attention to growing frustrations among young Basotho, many of whom are battling joblessness and economic exclusion.

He had previously aligned himself with various opposition parties and civil society movements, including Bacha Shutdown, which has been vocal about the government’s failure to deliver on its promises to improve the lives of young people.

While initial reports indicated he had been released after his first court appearance, Thakeli was rearrested, and now faces charges believed to relate to sedition.

Observers say the charges are likely to be viewed as heavy-handed, especially amid rising concerns over freedom of expression and the policing of online discourse.

Thakeli’s case has sparked debate in Lesotho over the boundaries between free speech, youth activism, and what authorities deem offensive or inciteful, particularly in the digital space.
