SA's second biggest party sets conditions for government of national unity

Date: Jun 7, 2024

South Africa's second biggest party, the Democratic Alliance (DA), has stipulated clear terms for its involvement in the African National Congress's (ANC) proposed government of national unity.

The DA asserts it will consent to join only if the inclusion of Umkhonto Wesizwe, Economic Freedom Fighters and the Patriotic Alliance is categorically ruled out.

This announcement comes in the wake of ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa's call for a coalition government comprising various opposition factions, under strict conditions for participation.

The DA anticipates further clarification on the operational dynamics of the proposed unity government in their forthcoming meeting with the ANC.

DA's National Spokesperson, Werner Horn, expressed the need for specificity from the President regarding the nature of the coalition. "We are hopeful for more details from the ANC, after which our negotiating team will report back to the federal executive," Horn stated.

The Federal Council is set to make a decisive ruling on Monday, but Horn indicated that the current stance of the federal executive makes it exceedingly challenging, if not impossible, for the DA to be part of a government that includes the three mentioned parties.
