This follows serious allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal province Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
The charges were laid at the Cape Town Central police station on Wednesday. Mkhwanazi recently levelled allegations of corruption and interference in police operations against senior officials, naming Mchunu among them. He further claimed that certain figures within the police ministry have links to criminal syndicates.
Speaking outside the station, DA Deputy Chief Whip Baxolile Nodada said the party could not allow Ministers to mislead Parliament without consequence.
“We cannot allow a situation where ministers lie to Parliament, it is one of the few tools available to hold public officials accountable,” said Nodada. “That’s why we’ve taken this step against the Minister of Police.”
He added that this was not an isolated action. “Just over a week ago, we did the same in relation to the Minister of Higher Education. That case is already being looked into by the Hawks, in fact, we had a meeting with them this morning.”
The DA has called on authorities to thoroughly investigate the claims and ensure that those implicated are held accountable. Mchunu has not yet responded to the accusations.
