Mozambique opposition leader faces setback in party registration bid

Date: Jul 15, 2025

Venâncio Mondlane, a prominent opposition figure in Mozambique, has suffered a legal blow in his attempt to formally register his new political party, the National Alliance for a Free and Autonomous Mozambique (ANAMALALA).

The Constitutional Council rejected an appeal lodged by Mondlane, ruling that it had “no grounds” to proceed.

The Council stated that the Ministry of Justice remains within the legal deadline to rule on Mondlane’s registration request, after adjustments were submitted in June. The decision has fuelled fresh debate about the application of the country’s Political Parties Law and the way institutions handle the emergence of new opposition movements.

At the same time, Mondlane is on a visit to several European countries, where he has been meeting political figures and representatives of international foundations. He is seeking to raise awareness of his political cause abroad. Mondlane claims to be the target of political persecution and faces the risk of arrest when he returns home, with multiple court cases hanging over him linked to protests that took place following the most recent elections.

Speaking in an interview, Legal and political analyst Alexandre Chivale said that the developments surrounding Mondlane’s party reflect deeper tensions in Mozambique’s political landscape and highlight the barriers faced by opposition movements in gaining formal recognition.
