Donald Trump embarks on first major foreign visit since taking office

Date: May 12, 2025

United States (US) President Donald Trump is set to depart on Monday on a four-day trip to the Middle East, marking his first significant international visit since assuming office in January.

The trip, expected to focus heavily on business and investment, will include stops in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, three of the region’s wealthiest nations.

According to regional reports, Trump’s itinerary includes a crucial meeting on Tuesday with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The discussions will be attended by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Syria’s President Ahmed al-Sharaa, in what is viewed as an effort to advance a ceasefire arrangement in Gaza.

Adding to the diplomatic significance of the visit, Hamas has reportedly signalled its willingness to release hostage Edan Alexander, who holds both Israeli and American citizenship. US envoy and Chief Negotiator Steve Witkoff has described the move as a goodwill gesture towards Trump’s administration.

Meanwhile, reports suggest that Trump’s administration is preparing to accept a luxury Boeing jumbo jet as a gift from the Qatari royal family. The aircraft is expected to be designated as the new Air Force One before Trump leaves office, marking an unprecedented development in diplomatic relations between the US and Qatar.
