SA marks 55th World Earth Day with launch of first locally manufactured electric bus

Date: Apr 22, 2025

South Africa’s (SA) Deputy Minister of Transport, Mkhuleko Hlengwa, says the transport sector remains commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainability in country

Hlengwa was speaking during the launch of SA’s first locally manufactured electric bus, held in Pinetown, west of Durban. The launch marked a significant milestone as the world observed the 55th World Earth Day.

The fully electric bus, which is said to be first of its kind to be manufactured locally, uses solar energy, making it an economically friendly option that promotes sustainable transportation.

The "MAN Truck and Bus" South Africa, which is the company behind the idea, says the aim is to create a sustainable future by protecting the environment. According to environmentalists, between 2022 and 2023, South Africa was indeed ranked as the 14th largest emitter of greenhouse gases global.

This was attributed to the country's heavy reliance on coal for energy production. Managing Director at  the manufacturing company, Jan Ainchinger says MAN has set itself high standards and responsibly.

“Both in reducing our carbon footprint, when it comes to producing our products as well as to develop products which are adding to a sustainable future by providing emission free solutions. MAN is committed to reducing its carbon footprint in their worldwide production to become co2 neutral by 2030. It's a long way and not an easy one”, Ainchinger said.

Hlengwa, who also attended the launch, emphasised the importance of efforts for SA to meet its 2030 emissions reduction goals.

“If we are to build an inclusive, equitable economy then transport must be the bridge not the barrier, that is why investments like these are so powerful. they demonstrate that infrastructure development, job creation, environmental stewardship ad economic empowerment can and must work hand in hand .The unveiling today aligns seamlessly with the core pillars of our green transport strategy .To this end, our work must correctly then include accelerating the rollout of electric vehicles supported by smart charging infrastructure", Hlengwa said.

Also in attendance, was the Mayor of the city of eThekwini, in the country’s KwaZulu-Natal province, Cyril Xaba, who said the city has decided to acquire new electric buses to expand its existing fleet.

“To demonstrate that Durban is ready to become the new electric vehicle production hub, the municipality will soon be procuring electric buses as part of our fleet replacement program. This will also assist in promoting green transportation solution, combat air solution and reduce our carbon footprint", Xaba said.

With over $2.5 million invested in the project, the bus and truck manufacturer says 20% of its production will include electronic buses in the coming years.
