Date: Aug 12, 2024

South Africa's (SA) Home Affairs Minister, Leon Schreiber, says he will provide an update regarding the alleged identity fraud involving the mother of a former Miss SA contestant as soon as information is available.

The department is investigating the identity of Chidimma Adetshina, following a social media outcry that she could be Nigerian.

An investigation has revealed that Adetshina's mother may have committed identity fraud nearly 23 years ago.

Ahead of the pageant on Saturday, Adetshina withdrew from it. Schreiber has told SABC News that he does not want to divulge any information that could hamper the investigation. He again emphasised that the best way to curb fraud and corruption at the Department of Home Affairs, is to digitilise the system, “We need to conclude in comprehensive manner, so that if action must flow from it...that not found wanting into legal process. pursuing this with urgency, because a case study of deficiencies. really and hopefully can move the conversation to solution, paper based and human interaction is something that belongs to 20th century, we are now in 21st century.”
