SA Government under pressure to evict communities illegally squatting in schools

Date: Jun 30, 2025

The Department of Education in South Africa’s (SA) Gauteng province says the unlawfully occupied Bagomane Primary School in the township of Soweto, is in the list of schools they want to reclaim and revamp

The department is in need of schools as the numbers of learners continues to increase. The school closed down decades ago due to a low number of learners. In 2018, Diepkloof residents took over the school and turned it into what they call a housing estate.

Provincial Education Department Spokesperson, Steve Mabona says bringing the school back into the system will help curb the current overcrowding in other schools.

“We are pressured in Gauteng, we cannot afford to have a school that is utilised for something else only to find that it was zoned for a school so we just need to go back unlike before when that school was repurposed because we didn't have the numbers,” Mabona said.
