Palestine Solidarity Campaign marches to US consulate, demanding Gaze cease fire

Date: Apr 25, 2025

Members of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) have protested outside the United States (US) Consulate in Cape Town, South Africa, demanding an immediate end to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

The members have demanded, amongst things, that the US government ensures a full, unconditional ceasefire and stop the killing in the strip. The group says Washington continues to defy the United Nations and international law, by providing political cover and military support to Israel

The organisation’s Campaign Co-ordinator, Usuf Chikte has called for the US government to comply with the International Criminal Court's arrest warrants for Israeli leaders accused of war crimes.

“We are accusing the US not only complicity but being active partner in the genocide. The US is also calling through Trump for the displacement, the extermination and the expulsion of people from Gaza. And we are objecting towards that, not only objecting but we are asking the US to stop that complicity and we want the US together with Israel to be held accountable for that. And for that, South Africa is being punished. The US are blocking aid to SA. The United States are trying to restrict trade from SA,” Chikte.

His sentiments were shared by fellow PSC member, Abeedha Adams, who says the supply of coal to Israel is escalating the ongoing war in Gaza.

“SA is exporting through Glenco, thousands of tons of coal still to Israel, thereby fueling the genocide. Because that coal is used for the Israeli occupation force but it's also used to supply energy in the illegal settlements. That our Palestinian brothers and sisters even now we know since the most recent blockage, they have been discontinuing their access to electricity and energy all the time,” Adams said.

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) in the Western Cape has also joined the calls, adding that the SA government must amplify pressure to Washington in order to stop the war. COSATU Provincial Secretary, Malvern De Bruyn has demanded that the US stop all weapons sales and military support to Israel.

“Today we are here to tell the world that we want war to stop and we can't even call it a war. Want the genocide to stop in Palestine. Want a ceasefire on Gaza and we want our government to do more to put pressure on the American government and the Israeli government. We can't have a scenario where people have been killed on daily basis, women and children and the world is quiet,” De Bruyn said.
