Celebrating World Autism Awareness Day, SA highlights support for Autism Spectrum Disorder

Date: Apr 2, 2025

Today, April 2, marks World Autism Awareness Day, an occasion to celebrate the lives and achievements of individuals living with Autism Spectrum Disorder globally.

ASD is a neurological condition that influences communication and behaviour, presenting unique challenges and strengths in those affected.

In South Africa (SA), the Western Cape Minister of Social Development, Jaco Londt, has reaffirmed his department's commitment to supporting children and adults with disabilities, including those with Autism.

Londt highlighted various initiatives funded by the Department of Social Development (DSD), such as four non-profit organisations Child and Youth Care Centres that provide alternative care for children with profound disabilities.

Additionally, the DSD manages the Sivuyile Residential Facility, a centre that accommodates individuals with severe and profound physical and intellectual disabilities. These programmes aim to enhance the quality of life for individuals with disabilities and ensure they receive the care and support they need.
