The country’s official unemployment rate currently stands at a staggering 32.1%, with youth unemployment at an even more concerning 45.5% for the third quarter of 2024. This crisis is exacerbated by widespread job cuts in key sectors, heightening fears of further economic instability.
The organisation’s plea comes just ahead of President Cyril Ramaphosa's much-anticipated 2025 State of the Nation Address (SONA), which is expected to address pressing issues such as unemployment.
Tebogo Mashilompane, SaveSA’s Communications Director, expressed concern over recent job losses, including the closure of ArcelorMittal’s long-steel plants, which led to the loss of 3 500 jobs. This is just one example of how SA’s job market is shrinking, leaving thousands of families in jeopardy.
Mashilompane further pointed out the ongoing job cuts within public service sectors, including the potential loss of 67 000 Community Work Programme positions, as well as cuts affecting health community workers and teachers. “Before we even address the unemployment of those currently out of work, we must protect those already in the system,” he urged.
SaveSA is calling on Ramaphosa to address both immediate and long-term solutions for the country’s growing unemployment crisis. "If those already employed are losing their jobs, how can we expect to create opportunities for the unemployed?" Mashilompane questioned.
The organisation is seeking clear, actionable plans from the President to tackle job losses in vital sectors and stimulate job creation across the economy.
