AU steps forward to mediate in escalating DRC conflict

Date: Feb 17, 2025

The African Union (AU) has expressed its readiness to step in and mediate the intensifying conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), as violence escalates between government forces and the M23 rebel group.

Speaking at a briefing during the AU summit in Addis Ababa, Bankole Adegboyega Adeoge, the AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security, highlighted the union's commitment to resolving the crisis through dialogue.

Adeoge's remarks come as chaotic scenes continue to unfold in Bukavu, a city in the eastern DRC, where the M23 rebels have continued their aggressive offensive. The unrest has raised fears of a broader regional conflict, with many concerned about the potential for further destabilisation.

"The only way to solve the problem in eastern DRC is for all parties to sit around the table, and the AU is ready to play that mediation role under the umbrella of the Luanda Process," Adeoge said.

The Luanda Process, a regional initiative involving several African nations, aims to bring together various stakeholders to peacefully resolve the conflict and prevent further escalation.
