SA opposition party announces alliance with Forum 4 Service Delivery

Date: Jan 16, 2025

Opposition political party ActionSA in South Africa (SA) has announced a strategic alliance with Forum 4 Service Delivery (F4SD, a smaller party, with plans to contest the 2026 local government elections together under the ActionSA banner.

This partnership will see F4SD's 36 councillors operating under the ActionSA banner, further consolidating the opposition party’s influence in municipalities across the country.

Dr. Mbahare Kekana, leader of F4SD, will take up the position of Deputy President within ActionSA as part of the agreement. The alliance brings ActionSA representation in 14 municipalities spanning five provinces, a significant expansion for a party previously active only in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal provinces.

Speaking to Channel Africa’s Peter Ndoro, ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba highlighted the significance of the partnership. “This merger represents a landmark moment for us. F4SD has proven its ability to mobilise voters with minimal resources, demonstrating the deep-rooted desire of South Africans for ethical leadership and change,” said Mashaba.

Mashaba explained that a constitutional amendment within ActionSA was necessary to allow F4SD councillors to maintain dual membership until the 2026 elections. “This arrangement ensures continuity and avoids interference with the Electoral Commission of SA IEC, but from today, on the ground, these councillors are operating as ActionSA members,” he clarified.

Kekana’s appointment as Deputy President brings new strengths to ActionSA, particularly in grassroots mobilisation. “Dr. Kekana’s extensive experience in building support with limited resources is invaluable. He will lead the establishment of sustainable branches and credible structures nationwide, paving the way for an elective conference in the future,” Mashaba noted.

The strategic merger not only boosts ActionSA’s numerical strength but also enhances its operational capacity in underrepresented areas. “We’ve effectively added 36 councillors to our ranks and now have a presence in provinces like Limpopo and the Free State provinces. This positions us as a more formidable force in local governance,” said Mashaba.

Mashaba also shared his broader vision for the coalition’s impact: “The goal is to identify key municipalities where no governance can occur without ActionSA post-2026. This alliance is just the beginning. We are in talks with other like-minded parties to grow this umbrella, and I urge South Africans to watch this space.”

Kekana expressed his optimism about the partnership, stating: “This is a historic moment. Joining forces with ActionSA allows us to expand our reach and strengthen our shared commitment to ethical leadership and community-driven solutions.”
