DRC bans media coverage of former President Kabila

Date: Jun 5, 2025

Authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have issued a directive barring media outlets from reporting on former President Joseph Kabila or his political party.

The move follows accusations linking Kabila to the M23 rebel group, allegations he has denied.

The country’s media regulator took to the airwaves this week, speaking on several stations including one supported by the United Nations, warning that any broadcaster covering Kabila’s activities would be suspended. The ban is widely seen as a bid by the government in Kinshasa to limit Kabila’s political influence and mute growing criticism of President Félix Tshisekedi.

Kabila, who stepped down in 2019 after 18 years in power, remains a divisive figure. Supporters view the media blackout as an authoritarian tactic, especially as calls mount from opposition voices accusing Tshisekedi of drifting towards dictatorship.

So far, the ban appears to have limited reach in parts of eastern DRC, where rebel groups hold sway, and Kabila is reportedly based. These regions remain largely beyond the government’s control, raising questions about how effective the media restrictions will be in shaping public perception.

The government has not yet formally charged Kabila, but the accusations and media clampdown mark a significant escalation in the country’s already fraught political landscape.
