Cape Verde marks 50 years of independence as youth reflect on nation’s future

Date: Jul 7, 2025

According to Cape Verdean singer Zul Alves, independence is not simply a moment in history, but “a living struggle that must be renewed by every generation.”

As Cape Verde commemorates 50 years since gaining independence from Portuguese colonial rule on July 5, 1975, the anniversary has become a moment of reflection, especially among the country’s younger generations.

For Alves, a prominent figure in Cape Verde’s cultural scene, the ideals that fuelled the independence movement, unity, dignity, and progress, remain relevant, but must now be applied to the country’s current challenges.

“The values of independence must go beyond speeches and ceremonies,” she said. “Young people must carry these ideals into the fight against unemployment, inequality, and the pressures that push so many to emigrate.”

Since declaring independence in 1975, Cape Verde has built a reputation for political stability and democratic governance. Yet many young Cape Verdeans are questioning whether the economic and social progress achieved thus far is enough.

The golden jubilee has sparked conversations around identity, opportunity, and the responsibilities facing the youth in shaping the nation’s next chapter. For Alves, cultural expression, through music, dialogue, and education, is key to ensuring that the legacy of independence continues to inspire action.

“We honour those who fought for our freedom by continuing their work,” she said. “Independence isn’t behind us; it’s something we live and build every day.”
