Former SA President defends SA’s position against US

Date: Feb 10, 2025

Former President Thabo Mbeki has defended South Africa's (SA) position against the United States (US) of America.

This after the US President, Donald Trump signed an Executive Order cutting off aid to South Africa following the enactment of the Expropriation Act.

President Cyril Ramaphosa responded by saying SA is a sovereign country that can have its own rules and regulations.

In an exclusive interview with the SABC, Mbeki says Trump took a decision without consulting with Pretoria.

He further says SA has been having a good relationship with the Republicans in the US.

"I honestly don't understand it. I agree with the position our government has taken that it should directly engage the Trump administration, I think that is very correct. Maybe in that engagement, we will come to know what happened, what has changed. It is a radical change, completely out of the blue with regard to the behaviour of the Republican Party in the US towards us. It's a radical change overnight," said Mbeki.
