Over 180 migrants missing after boats sink near Djibouti, Yemen

Date: Mar 8, 2025

At least 180 people are feared missing after four boats carrying migrants capsized off the coastlines of Djibouti and Yemen on Thursday night.

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) confirmed the tragic news, with reports indicating that two people are confirmed dead.

According to United Nations officials, two boats overturned off the coast of Yemen, leaving 186 people unaccounted for. While two crew members were rescued, the whereabouts of the remaining passengers are still unknown.

Simultaneously, two boats capsized off the coast of Djibouti. Rescue teams were able to recover two bodies from the water, but all other individuals on board were successfully rescued.

"This route is widely known as one of the deadliest for migrants, with over 500 deaths recorded in 2024," said an IOM spokesperson.

The incident highlights the ongoing dangers faced by migrants crossing from the Horn of Africa to Yemen in search of better opportunities. Many of these migrants, fleeing poverty and conflict, endure perilous sea voyages in overcrowded, unsafe boats.
