SA’s Mandela Day puts spotlight on child safety

Date: Jul 14, 2025

With Mandela Day approaching, the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund has urged South Africans (SA) to prioritise safe spaces for children, especially in communities where violence remains a daily threat.

Speaking during the Fund’s 30th anniversary event in Johannesburg, Chief Executive Dr Linda Ncube-Nkomo said protecting children is central to preserving Nelson Mandela’s legacy. Mandela Day, observed each year on July 18, celebrates the life of SA’s first democratic President through acts of service.

At Gold Reef City, Johannesburg, nearly 200 children gathered to mark the occasion, continuing a tradition Mandela himself started. “In the week of his birthday, Madiba would spend time with children, creating moments of joy,” said Ncube-Nkomo. “We continue this because it allows children to laugh and play freely in a safe space.”

She raised concerns over rising levels of violence against children, noting that SA records four times the global average of child murders. “It is not children hurting each other, it is adults. That is why creating safe spaces in homes, schools and communities must be intentional,” she said.

Ncube-Nkomo encouraged South Africans to take everyday action rather than limit goodwill to Mandela Day. “Our message is simple; kindness must be a way of life. Even a small gesture like donating R67 ($3.65) through our ‘Mandelathon’ campaign can make a real difference.”

Nedbank, a long-time supporter of the Fund, reaffirmed its commitment. “Madiba’s passion for children is well known. From the Children’s Fund to the Mandela Children’s Hospital, his vision was always clear, to uplift young lives,” said Nedbank Social Impact Manager Bernice van der Walt.

This year’s Mandela Day will be marked under the theme, “It’s Still in Our Hands to Combat Poverty and Inequity.”
