Date: Oct 4, 2024

Lesotho marks its Independence Day today and commemorates 200 years since it was founded.

The national day holds great significance as Basotho reflect on their history and achievements. Many activities have been planned in the country including the commemorative hike known as Moshoeshoe walk.

Political scientist and former lecturer at the National University of Lesotho Professor Kopano Makoa says this is a very significant milestone for Basotho,” We became a small country because we were defending what was bigger than this. eventually we were able at least salvage something which is unique in Southern Africa. Remember all the kingdoms in southern Africa were overthrown by colonies and subordinated colonies so that is why you have the present day South Africa(SA).

So SA to us serves as a reminder that we are the only nation who stood up and defended our independence. so what is says is that we have been independent for 200 years.
