Rights groups have reported that the majority of the casualties, among them some 400 injured, were as a result of gunshot wounds, many thought to be from law enforcement. UN Secretary General Spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric has expressed concern over the violence.
“We are very saddened by the loss of life. Our human rights colleagues have been particularly focused on the issue of the gunshot wounds. They've also noted that the Independent Policing Oversight Authority of Kenya and have said they will launch an investigation. We look forward, to an independent, and transparent investigation. And it bears reminding that under international law, under human rights law, lethal force by law enforcement such as firearms should only be used when strictly necessary in order to protect life,” Dujarric said.
