The closure of the Nyamithuthu refugee settlement in Nsanje District has exacerbated the situation, leaving over 300 displaced Mozambican nationals in limbo.
Despite voluntary repatriation efforts, many asylum seekers have refused to return to Mozambique, citing concerns for their safety. They are now appealing for refugee status and continued international protection.
Dr George Chaima, President of the New Restoration Plan, a Malawian social think tank, has urged authorities to carefully assess the legitimacy of asylum requests before enforcing repatriation.
“If some of the refugees are refusing to go back, then there must be valid reasons for that,” Chaima stated. “Whenever people flee their country due to political conflicts, some become direct targets of political opponents. Forcing them to return contradicts laws designed to protect refugees through diplomatic arrangements.”
He stressed that Malawi should uphold its responsibility by accommodating those who meet the legal criteria for refugee status while ensuring compliance with international and national asylum laws.
