SA Gauteng province schools suspend food sales amidst poisoning scare

Date: Nov 8, 2024

South Africa's Gauteng province Education Department has issued an immediate suspension of food sales at all educational institutions within the province.

This precautionary measure comes as a direct consequence of the alarming number of cases reported, which has seen numerous students hospitalised and, tragically, some fatalities.

The department's Spokesperson, Steve Mabona, emphasised the critical need for schools and School Governing Bodies to exercise stringent oversight over all food vendors, tuckshops, and related outlets.

The directive outlines specific mandates to ensure that only nutritionally valuable food is sold on or near school premises and that no expired or repackaged food items make their way to the students.

Compliance with these regulations by any individual or business entity providing food services to learners is mandatory.

This move underscores the department's commitment to student safety and well-being, as it grapples with the urgent task of safeguarding its pupils against further health risks.

The suspension will remain in effect until a thorough investigation is conducted and appropriate measures are put in place to prevent any recurrence of such distressing events.
