SA Minister advocates negotiations for peace in Africa at governance summit

Date: Apr 7, 2025

South Africa's (SA) Minister of Public Service and Administration, Inkosi Mzamo Buthelezi, has expressed confidence that peace and security can be achieved across Africa through dialogue and effective governance.

Speaking at the African Peer Review Mechanism's two-day summit on governance and conflict prevention, Buthelezi highlighted the ongoing instability in regions such as South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo as key challenges to be addressed.

Buthelezi emphasised the importance of leadership in fostering peace, stating, "Our decisions have far-reaching impacts, not just on our opponents but on the honest people on the ground. Leadership is about minimising conflicts and finding peace through negotiations, not through the barrel of a gun."

He reaffirmed the continent's commitment to the African Union's goal of "silencing the guns" by 2030, describing it as both a noble and achievable objective.

"We need to ask ourselves how we can address issues better because leadership is about creating solutions that prioritise peace," he added.
