This follows the assassination of the municipality's Head of Forensic Audits, Mpho Mafole. The official was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting on the a major highway in the city of Johannesburg on Monday. 

The motive of the shooting is unknown at this stage and police are investigating.

Gauteng Police Spokesperson, Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi says police found the victim in his car with gunshot wounds. According to Xhakaza, the city has witnessed a disturbing trend of violent attacks  against officials fighting corruption. In 2023, the city's Chief Financial Officer, Kagiso Lerutla survived a shooting, while Simnikiwe Mapini, an Adjudicator in the Finance Department, was tragically killed in the same year.
