SA health expert urges public to vaccinate during flu season

Date: Apr 22, 2025

South African (SA) health experts have warned that the flu can cause serious illness for those at risk, including the elderly, pregnant women, and children.

They have advised the public to get vaccinated as SA flu season starts.

Seasonal influenza vaccine is available at public health clinics as well as through private healthcare providers, including general practitioners and pharmacies.

The World Health Organisation and National Institute for Communicable Diseases recognise vaccination as the most effective way to prevent the flu.

Dr Michael de Villiers has cautioned against the use of antibiotics for the treatment of the flu.
