Namibian Former Minister in custody over corruption, sexual assault charges

Date: Apr 28, 2025

Namibian Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform, Mac-Albert Hengari, has been remanded in custody following serious allegations of corruption and sexual assault.

Hengari was arrested after accusations emerged that he attempted to bribe a rape victim to prevent the case from being reported.

President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah's swift action to terminate Hengari's appointment underscores her administration's firm stance against corruption and unethical behaviour among public officials.

Hengari was denied bail today in court by state prosecutor Seredine Jacobs during his court appearance alongside co-accused Simon Hanga.

"The charges include attempting to defeat the course of justice, read with the Riotous Assemblies Act," said Jacobs.

She added that bail was denied due to the seriousness of the crime, fears that the accused might interfere with police investigations, and the possibility of the two accused being flight risks, as the co-accused holds residency in Germany.

The case has been postponed to 3 June 2025, pending further investigations.
