Youssef outlined the ongoing humanitarian crisis that has reached critical levels in these regions, as the ICRC intensifies its operations to assist civilians caught in the crossfire of violent conflicts.
In the eastern DRC, Youssef reported that over 400 bodies have been retrieved from the streets of Goma in recent days. These bodies, both civilian and military, serve as a grim reminder of the decades-long conflict that has ravaged the country. The ICRC has been actively involved in body retrieval and managing the logistics of handling the deceased. Youssef expressed concern over the strain on medical supplies, as the crisis shifts focus to war surgery and physical rehabilitation.
The situation in Sudan is equally dire, with ongoing violence between Sudanese armed forces and paramilitary groups. Youssef highlighted that over 70% of hospitals in the country are non-functional, and food insecurity is escalating, with half of Sudan’s population requiring humanitarian aid. He also underscored the refugee crisis, with many fleeing to neighbouring countries such as Ethiopia, South Sudan, and Chad.
Mozambique, too, remains deeply affected by conflict, particularly in Cabo Delgado, where over 200 000 people have been displaced. The lack of essential services, including water and healthcare, has worsened the plight of the displaced, exacerbating an already dire situation.
The ICRC continues its efforts to engage with warring factions, seeking solutions to end these devastating conflicts and alleviate the suffering of civilians across the continent.
