The country’s Finance Minister, Enoch Godongwana, during his budget speech in May, said there would be stricter conditions for social grant allocations. This includes quarterly reporting of grant suspensions and cancellations. Chairperson of Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Social Development, Bridget Masango says the committee has serious reservations and concerns about the conditions even though they are in support of combatting fraud.
“This a deeply concerning possibilities-possibility rather for millions who relied on this support. So I want to be clear programme director. The portfolio committee on social development is deeply concerned about these conditions not because we are opposed to fraud prevention but because the current implementation is causing untold delays, confusion and deeply distress among beneficiaries. These delays and grants payments are living many in limbo-unable to buy basic necessities like food,”
