Several regional leaders arriving in Zimbabwe for the 44th SADC summit

Date: Aug 16, 2024

Several regional leaders have started to arrive in Harare, Zimbabwe, for the 44th Southern African Development Community (SADC) heads of states and government summit tomorrow.

HThey include the Presidents of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi, as well as the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Lesotho, Sam Matekane.

Some civic society organisations meeting in Harare ahead of the summit are calling for the revival of the SADC tribunal or formation of a new entity which would be mandated to hold member countries accountable for their actions.

Political commentator, Tony Reeler, says an independent body is required to hold the executive accountable,” One of the key institutions SADC had was the SADC Tribunal. So instead of SADC countries accusing each other. Not the pleasant fracas between Zambia and Zimbabwe now if you had SADC Tribunal and Zimbabwe was unhappy about the SEOM report they could go to the SADC Tribunal. They've got rid of the body and that is because they fear accountability that's my view so they don't want to hold each other accountable. They are just happy with the arrangement because some high flying rhetoric, reality is very different.”
