SA police deploy occult-related crimes unit to probe following discovery of mutilated teenager’s body

Date: Jun 3, 2025

An occult-related crimes unit of the South African Police, which specialises in hate crimes, has been deployed to investigate the murder of Likhona Fose

The unit was deployed after the 14-year-old’s body was found with some parts mutilated in Durban Deep, Roodepoort, west of the city Johannesburg.

The teenager disappeared on Saturday and her remains were found in a veld on Sunday by a passer-by. Deputy Minister of the country’s Police, Polly Boshielo, says authorities are deeply concerned, as some body parts were taken and have yet to be recovered. She says police are working around the clock and that the case is being treated with the utmost urgency.

“As SA Police, we have what we call an occult unit because we are suspecting that it might be cultural related. We are going to exhaust all resources to investigate this matter, the police’s occult unit is responsible for investigating case where body parts are removed from victims for various reasons including hate and multi-crime, so there are two possible,” Boshielo said.
