This as the African Penguin is at risk of going extinct in the wild within the next 10 years. Environmentalists say the current conservation measures are not enough to ensure their future as an estimated population of less than ten thousand breeding pairs are struggling to survive.
The march will take place amidst an ongoing landmark litigation between the Biodiversity Law Centre, working with BirdLife SA, Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds, and the Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment.
Climate Justice Charter Movement KZN Chairperson, Delwyn Pillay explains the plight of the African Penguin, “The African Penguin has been listed as critically endangered and will be extinct by 2035 and that if we don't take appropriate measures to try and stop this.
SA has about 80% of the African penguin population and is the only African population in southern Africa.”
