Gabon Constitutional Court approves presidential candidates amid controversy

Date: Mar 23, 2025

Gabon’s Constitutional Court has approved a list of eight candidates to run in the Central African nation’s presidential elections in April.

The list includes interim President Brice Oligui Nguema, who seized power in a military coup in 2023.

Transitional leaders are usually not allowed to run in elections, but a new constitution was approved by a landslide last November, exempting Nguema from this restriction. Opposition parties have raised concerns that the junta may seek to remain in power for an extended period.
