African continent faces a rise in mosquito-borne infections

Date: Aug 20, 2024

Today is World Mosquito Day, and with that the African continent faces a rise in mosquito- borne infections, placing pressure on public health systems. Globally there are 3 500 species of mosquitoes with 837 of them found in Africa.

According to Patience Akume from Rand Merchant Bank Partnership to end malaria, Mosquito Day is a day when we sit back and reflect on the impact that mosquitoes have on the world, and especially on Africa, where the disease burden from mosquitoes is still disproportionate compared to the rest of the world.

“When it comes to mosquitoes, they are not responsible for just malaria. We are looking at yellow fever, dengue fever, Zika virus and West Nile Fever. We are looking at a host of diseases that mosquitoes are responsible for, and therefore, the complexities of these diseases and how they are evolving in terms of biological threats and  resistance is not matching with the investments that we are making,” says Akume.

Studies show that greater investment is vital in the fight to eradicate malaria.

We need about $7.3 billion to be able to eliminate malaria and Our government must starts digging deep into their pockets and decide once and for all to eliminate malaria.  We've seen Mauritius do it, malaria can be eliminated, Akume explained.
