The soldiers are part of a Southern African Development Community (SADC) peacekeeping mission in the conflict-affected region.
Speaking during a visit to the SANDF stand at the Rand Easter Show in Johannesburg, Motshekga said logistics for the safe return of the troops are being finalized.
“We are working on the logistics on how to bring them home safely. Every time I meet with the generals, I’m updated on our containers, the flights that must bring them back. The plan is under way. We will announce the return date soon but we must also fix the Goma Airport or use alternate routes via Uganda or Rwanda,” she said.
Rear Admiral Prince Tshabalala added that the SANDF is hopeful a ceasefire will be reached between warring factions in the DRC, which would allow troops to return safely.
“Our return depends on the progress of ceasefire negotiations. Our chief is actively involved through the Committee of Chiefs of Defence Forces for both SADC and the East African Community. We hope his efforts will bear fruit,” Tshabalala explained.
