Stephan Karghoo, Director at the Nelson Mandela Centre for African Culture in Mauritius, highlighted the significance of the event.
"We are paying tribute to our ancestors. There's recognition of what has happened in the past in Mauritius by leaders, political leaders mainly, so this forms part of all these commemorations, abolition of slavery, paying tribute to our ancestors, paying to great Black figures, for example, paying tribute to our tangible and intangible heritage, our language, our music, our cuisine. These events are to acknowledge the contribution of our ancestors in the construction of Mauritius," Karghoo said.
