KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has accused senior police officials, including Mchunu, of being corrupt and having close links to criminal syndicates.
On Friday, Mchunu denied the allegations, saying he was ready to defend himself before the commission of inquiry. Professor Firoz Cachalia will start to act as Police Minister on the first of next month.
Minister Gwede Mantashe will act in the position until then.
Naidoo reflects on the unfolding developments. “I am just thinking about the commission of inquiry, this counterveiling response and the legal action mentioned.”
“In terms of consulting his lawyers and then of course looking at the responses from the side of those that are supporting the Police Commissioner in KwaZulu Natal and the fact that he doesn’t have any social media; there are only fake accounts etc., it’s just a pressure cooker waiting to explode at a certain point. So obviously, now that’s where we are. The question is what will be the mandate in terms of the commission of inquiry in dealing with this issue,” she adds.
