Matlala is currently in custody facing serious charges, including attempted murder, money laundering, and conspiracy to commit murder.
The controversy surrounding Matlala intensified following allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who accused Police Minister Senzo Mchunu of having links with the businessman.
Mchunu, however, has categorically denied any relationship with Matlala or involvement in a $20.23 million medical services tender that was previously awarded to him. The contract was cancelled earlier this year.
Speaking to the media, Bolhuis painted a grim picture of Matlala’s operations and influence.
“Matlala is an extremely dangerous man, and also a very important man for those involved with organised crime, especially for those in government and senior police officials,” Bolhuis warned.
“He will commit the dirty work. He is operating, funding, and in cahoots with Boko Haram, and I would say those in the taxi industry, the hit men, and the gangsters there.”
