SA woman in court over alleged kidnap syndicate

Date: Jun 22, 2025

The case against a South African (SA) woman accused of being part of a syndicate targeting young female professionals is set to resume in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court.

The case has drawn national attention as authorities allege the woman is part of a criminal operation active across several parts of SA.

According to the state, the syndicate lures victims, often through online dating or social settings, before kidnapping and robbing them. In two recent cases reported by SABC News, young women were taken out on dates by an alleged scammer. Once inside the vehicle, they were introduced to another woman who was presented as the scammer’s younger sister, before being attacked and robbed.

In one reported incident, the accused and a male accomplice, who remains at large, allegedly forced a female pedestrian into their vehicle in Gauteng. The victim was assaulted with a taser, had her cellphone taken, and money withdrawn from her bank account. She was later abandoned.

During last Tuesday’s proceedings, the state confirmed two additional cases with similar details were reported in Alexandra and Pretoria.

SA authorities have denied the SABC permission to broadcast the court proceedings, citing concerns that identifying the accused could jeopardise ongoing police investigations. The case remains under close watch as the investigation continues.
