Kizza Besigye is the husband of senior UN official and current Executive Director of UNAIDS, Winnie Byanyima, who took to social media, urging the Ugandan Government to release her husband, claiming he had been kidnapped in Nairobi.

Media reports suggest Besigye and another member of the opposition had been charged with a firearms offence in Uganda.

The Secretary-General’s Spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, says the situation is concerning.

“Yes, we’re very much aware of this report. In fact, I was on the phone with her not too long ago. We’re extremely concerned about the situation concerning Kizza Besigye’s disappearance and how it unfolded. It’s imperative that due process be followed and that his family and that his lawyers be given news of his whereabouts and his condition,” adds Dujarric.
