His remarks came during the country’s 45th Independence Day celebrations, which were held last Friday in Nembudziya, located in the Midlands Province.
The warning follows recent threats of nationwide protests led by former war veteran and outspoken former-ZANU PF member Blessed Caesar Geza, who has called for the President’s resignation. Geza, who left the ruling party under a cloud of corruption allegations, has been vocal in his criticism of the government, accusing it of failing to address the country’s deepening economic crisis.
Mnangagwa, however, dismissed such calls, describing them as attempts to disrupt progress and stir unrest. “Each of us has a duty to protect our country from those, both inside and outside, who seek to undermine our development. Let us remain focused and united,” he told the crowd.
He also praised Zimbabwe’s security forces for their loyalty and patriotism, saying they continue to safeguard the nation’s sovereignty and independence. The President urged Zimbabweans to be wary of disinformation, especially online, noting that social media is increasingly used to spread panic and create division.
Despite his assurances, political analysts say the speech lacked substance and failed to address pressing economic concerns, especially as corruption continues to run unchecked.
Just days before the event, Parliament was unexpectedly adjourned amid speculation that some MPs were planning to impeach Mnangagwa. He also skipped a planned Easter Sunday appearance in Mashonaland, sending Harare Provincial Affairs Minister Daniel Garwe in his place. Notably, slogans linked to his Vision 2030 initiative were absent during the celebrations.
Geza remains defiant, continuing to call for protests aimed at forcing Mnangagwa out of office. However, the President appears undeterred, insisting his administration remains committed to national development. He highlighted progress in agricultural reform, rural empowerment, and the issuance of land title deeds as evidence of his government's efforts to improve citizens' lives.
