The movement, spearheaded by the advocacy group United Against Hunger, is canvassing support through a door-to-door petition drive. The group aims to gather at least 100 000 signatures as more households struggle with the high cost of living.
Co-founder Mark Heywood warned that millions of South Africans are now facing daily hunger. “Roughly 20 million people in this country are food insecure,” he said. “Some go hungry every day, others at least by the end of the month. The impact is especially harsh on children.”
He added that nearly one in three children under the age of five suffers from stunted growth due to inadequate nutrition. “This isn't because we lack food in SA, we actually produce enough to feed everyone. The issue is access. Food has simply become too expensive for many.”
The campaign aims to push both retailers and authorities to take meaningful steps in making food more affordable, as pressure mounts to address SA’s deepening hunger crisis.
