SA Parliament demands answers following delays in apartheid-era crime prosecutions

Date: May 20, 2025

Members of South Africa's (SA) Parliament have heard of various challenges that are hindering the fast and efficient prosecution of Truth and Reconciliation Commission cases (TRC)

Various role players, among others, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and police appeared before the Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development, to discuss the implementation of the recommendations of the TRC. The NPA has a dedicated component that is prosecuting these matters.

Advocate Shubnum Singh says delays are caused by various issues, including experts that are needed to reconstruct scenes.

“This pertains to sourcing, creating a pool of and payment of experts, costs of legal representation for persons of interest and access to documentation in possession of Stakeholders,” Singh said.
