SA Minister addresses symposium looking at global interests

Date: Jul 12, 2024

In his first address as Minister of International Relations and Co-operation, Ronald Lamola says South Africa will continue to pursue its foreign policy that is anchored on respect for human rights.

Lamola has also emphasized a need for Africa to increase trade within the continent to use African minerals for its own development.

This has been Lamola’s view that dates back to his involvement in the African National Congress Youth League leadership. “Given the continent’s abundance mineral endowment, we need to ensure that these mineral resources benefit our people through beneficiation and value chains.

“It is time for the continent to develop a common strategy for extracting and protecting critical minerals such as lithium. Africa is experiencing an intense scramble for these strategic minerals and as such the strategy will preserve our supply and for local beneficiation.”

This is Lamola’s first public appearance since he was appointed Minister of International Relations and Co-operation. His appointment comes at a time when South Africa has a Government of National Unity (GNU) which includes 10 political parties.

There has been speculation that the inclusion of the Democratic Alliance (DA) and some smaller parties in the cabinet could see the country moderating its anti-Western criticism.

Lamola will also have to continue handling thorny issues around foreign policy.

For Lamola, Africa will continue to be a priority and more emphasis will be on economic diplomacy. “We must work towards fostering sustainable peace in northern parts of Mozambique following the conclusion of Southern African Development Community mission in July 2024.

“Additionally, we will maintain our engagements in peace and security efforts in the eastern parts of the Democratic republic of Congo (DRC) to support the country in achieving its development objectives. Our hearts go to our brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives in line of duty in Mozambique and most recently in the DRC.”

As the war continues to rage in Ukraine, Lamola says SA will not change its approach on this issue. He says the country will continue to push for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

On Israel’s operations in Gaza, Lamola did not mince his words. As the then Justice Minister, Lamola led the SA delegation that went to The Hague to represent SA’s case against Israel, and he is now firmly seized with this matter.

He also highlighted the importance of United Nations transformation, particularly the Security Council, and other institutions.

Lamola is expected to travel to the United Kingdom over the weekend. This will be his first engagement abroad as International Relations Minister.

He will also attend the African Union mid-term summit in Ghana next week.
